Current Astrological Weather Transits: Mars-Venus Opposition | 6/19/18 by Ashley

Today’s transits can be felt by the tension of the Mars-Venus opposition encroaching. This would put strain into our relationship, or we may feel the growing pressure to implement change for a dynamic that is no longer working. If lately, you have been feeling that things are a bit “off” in relationships, you are not alone. We are collectively on the precipice of a breakthrough. Ultimately, we are wanting more. More connection, more intimacy, more pleasure. It’s no ordinary Mars-Venus opposition however. The intensity is amplified by the opposition pairing up with Rahu/Ketu (the lunar nodes who are always opposing each other in the chart). We have Venus with Rahu in Cancer – the amplified desire for more pleasure and enjoyment in our lives. There may be a feeling that something is missing, because we have Mars-Ketu. With this aspect, it can give a feeling of emptiness in relationships, or like we somehow don’t matter. With Venus/Rahu, there can be a general feeling of unfulfillment. Many people are wanting to find their soul mates right now! If people aren’t already partnered up, there will be a desire to find something more meaningful and from the heart.

Venus is love. Paired with Rahu, there can be grander desires. Mars is drive and action. Paired with Ketu, there can be like we are having the rug pulled out from under us, or that we are digging holes to only find more dirt.

On a larger scale, just looking at Mars-Ketu, this can be a time where we see more violence, terrorist attacks, (nuclear) threats, or just plain stupid militant actions/agreements. Ketu is a shadow point. It’s not actually a planet, but it can be likened to a malefic who has a body but no head, logic or sense. Translation = taking actions without really thinking them through. Mars is the action planet. It rules Aries and Scorpio and is exalted in Capricorn and debilitated in Cancer. For example, Mars in Scorpio would be equivalent to a cage-fighter or street-fighter. Mars in Aries would the prototypical Soldier. Mars in Capricorn is the general that gives orders to the soldiers. We currently have Mars in Capricorn (conjunct Ketu, the “headless” shadow planet) opposite Venus in Cancer (conjunct Rahu, the “head without a body” shadow planet). We can see the actions of our current government as not being thoroughly thought-out, impulsive actions that don’t bring many beneficial results.

On a mundane level in our personal lives, it can feel like we are fighting a shadow. Something that is intangible, but somehow feels threatening. We may not know what it is, or what this shadow represents. To make the most of this transit, Mars in Capricorn is asking for discipline. We can be disciplined, be willing to do the uncomfortable hard work, without a lot of immediate results. It is a great time for taking precautions, preventative measures, and applying spiritual discipline.

Ketu is the most spiritual influence in our charts. It represents detachment, loss, severance, letting go and liberation. People hear liberation and they think, “wonderful!” But it’s liberation from things that we have attached to: ie, our security. If they are unhealthy attachments, it’s time to let them go, or they may be plucked from a tight grip. Sometimes Ketu removes things that we don’t want or no longer need. But other times, it removes things we didn’t ask for. Ultimately, it is preparing us for shaking loose from this material world. Loss is good practice for the final liberation.

The Art of War by Ashley

Mars in Vedic AstrologyThe planet Mars is referred to as “the red planet” because of its red-orange appearance. It is named after the Roman God of War. The Greek counterpart of Mars was Ares, who in Greek Mythology, had 2 sons: Phobos & Deimos. Phobos means panic & fear, and Deimos means terror & dread. These are the 2 moons that orbit Mars! It also gives you an idea of the energy that Mars bestows… We consider Mars a “malefic”, meaning that it tends to bring bad luck and misfortune. (Mars is the lesser Malefic, while Saturn is the greater malefic.)

The Astronomical function of Mars’ movement through a zodiac sign is within about roughly 45 days, depending on its speed, and retrograde motion. Mercury has gained quite a reputation for the retrograde, but all the planets (except the Sun and Moon) appear to go retrograde from the Earth’s perspective. Mars represents Tuesdays in the week. Basic characteristics of Mars are: speed, focus, effort, and motivation. This makes sense from an energetic standpoint of the 7-day work week. Mondays & Fridays are likely to be the least productive, as on Fridays people are already salivating for the weekend festivities and one step out the door, while on Mondays the majority of people are gearing up to the “back to the grind” mindset and possibly still in weekend-mode. Most beautician services are closed on Mondays, and I happen to know a certain metaphysical store that is also closed on Mondays… Point being, Tuesdays tend to be the most productive day of the week fueled on go-juice with a side of catch-up.

Mars in Vedic Astrology is activated in your chart at the 27th year, where it develops maturity and begins to exhibit its full strength. We usually begin to experience more independence around this age. This is right before the infamous “Saturn return” from age 28-30, which serves the purpose to create more structure and permanence in our lives, which can only be done when the untamed wildfire of Mars calms down to focus on accomplishing more with a slow burn.

Mars is the action-planet. It shows how you act and move through life. Its function is to create initiation and movement. Without Mars energy, everything would be still and stagnant. Mars is the warrior, the soldier. It’s the fighting nature that exhibits physical and mental strength, and inner and outer determination. This can express itself by being impulsive, quick-tempered, and destructive, therefore it is also the expression of Anger. Anger can be used destructively, or constructively based upon how that energy is channeled. On the destructive side, Mars is anger, aggression, accidents, pain and violence. On the constructive side, Mars is motivation, assertion, passion, lust, courage and dominance. Whichever sign and house Mars is placed in your chart, will give you an indication of the style and direction in which you use the warrior energy.

In the world, Mars represents masculinity and youth, but also males in general, like your male friends and brothers. It’s an indication of many things, but for example, it also represents: blood, muscles, weapons, fire, cars, sports, the military, exercise, and penetration. The symbol of Mars is a circle with an arrow protruding upwards from it. This symbolizes the male organ and function, depictive of masculinity, movement and drive. It is an invasive and destructive energy, but it also gives us the courage to destroy what is allowing for weakness in our lives in order to forge a new pathway through the forest of our habits, that will ultimately bring success from the determination and focus it takes to create something stronger.

Wherever Mars is situated in our chart, indicates where you will exert the most energy in life. Mars rules the signs of Aries and Scorpio, and is exalted in Capricorn, which is the sign of the general. This combination produces a capable, military strategist energy that is skilled with weapons to defeat the enemy… whatever that represents in our lives.
