Basic Astrology with Jerel

In every path of Western Esotericism, or Mystery Tradition, the scope of study often opens doors to subjects like Tarot, Qabalah, Alchemy, Herbalism, Theurgy, Ceremonial Magick, etc. But along these lines, one will often find Astrology, to some degree, as a common thread in supporting the understanding of these occult philosophies and practices. These days, Astrology is commonly perceived as a tool for divination or personality analysis, however it is so much more than that. Astrology is the study of fate and fortune, and traditionally, it was used to predict widespread events and disasters, to connect with spirits, and to elect auspicious days and times to do anything and everything from the magical to the mundane.

Astrology is fascinating, but it’s also very complex, and can be, understandably, very overwhelming for most people. As magical practitioners, astrology eventually comes into play whether or not you have genuine interest, or avoid it like the plague. So, the goal here isn’t to train you to become an astrologer, but rather to provide the basic resources, understanding and vocabulary that will support, and enrich, both your magical workings and perspective in a fun and practical way. In this class, amongst other topics, we will discuss and explore the zodiacal signs & houses, the planetary days & hours, the lunar phases & mansions, and of course, a little bit of chart interpretation!

Please come to class prepared with paper, a pencil, and a printout of your “Astrological Natal Chart.” …or at least knowledge of your Exact Birthdate, Birthplace & Time of Birth. As this class will present a hands-on approach to astrology, I’ve found that students often prefer/ find it easier to learn the class content through their own chart, however it is not necessary. If any of that information happens to be unknown, we can provide sample charts for you to work with.

Price:

$28 /class; $3 discount if paid in cash.

If the series is paid in full before the start of the second class, the price is $83 ($80 cash)

Discover the secrets of the stars through the art and science of Vedic Astrology! This is the oldest system of Astrology, and most accurate in terms of prediction. This ancient study incorporates Eastern philosophy regarding our karma, reincarnation, fate and destiny found within the larger tapestry of the night sky.

This six-week series will cover the fundamentals of Vedic Astrology: Grahas, Rasis, Bhavas, Drishtis and Nakshatras. These Sanskrit terms are commonly referred to in the Western world as: Planets, Signs, Houses, Aspects and Moon Signs; although the approach and understanding to these concepts are much different. These classes are designed to familiarize you with the important building blocks of Vedic Astrology.

*Each class will build upon the concepts of the previous class, therefore, the accumulated information will be best understood if all classes are attended. Participants are welcome to join in at any time during the series; however, the information from the prior class will not be repeated in order to give all the attendees the most comprehensive instruction.

**This class is not intended for making interpretations or predictions of individual charts. It is an introduction to the building blocks of the Vedic Astrology system.

Retrogrades & The Seven of Swords Card – by Ashley

seven of swords tarot

In light of the current and upcoming planetary transits, I felt inspired to write about the seven of swords tarot card. I draw this card often when there is something that should be taken care of properly, but hasn’t. This is either because it needs to be addressed at a later time, or possibly because it should be avoided altogether. The figure in the card has five swords in his arms but has dropped two. I normally interpret this as “dropping the ball”, or consciously “trying to get away” with something he shouldn’t. There is innumerable ways to interpret this card, although, “thievery, deception, sneakiness, sloppiness, ill-intent, and unwanted escape are the main themes. Let’s explore some alternative views on how this card’s meaning can be applied.

Excluding the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune & Pluto), three of the five planets that can go retrograde are now in their apparent backward motion: Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Of course, the Sun & Moon never go retrograde, and Rahu/Ketu are always retrograde. Soon to be joining the retrograde party is Mercury on Thursday, July 26th. Although by then, Jupiter will have gone direct (on July 10th).

This seven of swords card has such retrogradey energy. The two dropped swords, which can be seen as a skipped step or a mistake, will need to be reconciled and corrected at some point. Retrogrades in general have a “do-over” energy, in order to right the wrongs or adjust the plan. Planets in retrograde have a more intense quality of to what that planet represents, that urges people to be more introspective and reflect on their plans and decisions. Maybe this is where we could see a possibility of the thief’s conscience come into play in this card. In order to make corrections to a new plan of action or a new strategy to be implemented, awareness must first come into play. It’s much easier, rather, lazier to want to hastily move forward, but that skipped step will sooner or later come back to haunt him because of a little thing called karma. Justice has a natural reckoning equally proportionate to the crime or trespass committed.

What goes up, must come down. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This card appearing is a warning. Actually, it is a sign of grace that there is still time to make corrections to be thorough, accountable and responsible for our actions. Free will is a blessing. We get to make decisions. The two swords behind him signifies a choice. The two of swords card literally means “choices”. Do I decide to do this, or that? This card indicates that there is still time to adjust our actions and reconsider our choices, just as the planets are allowing now. With these retrogrades, we may even feel a more acute pressure to correct our course. Right now, we can either ignore what obviously needs to be done by a slew of excuses, just to have to account for them later, or we can use the energy given to us to make the extra effort to backtrack a little, reassess, reevaluate and choose a different fate.

Current Astrological Weather Transits: Mars-Venus Opposition | 6/19/18 by Ashley

Today’s transits can be felt by the tension of the Mars-Venus opposition encroaching. This would put strain into our relationship, or we may feel the growing pressure to implement change for a dynamic that is no longer working. If lately, you have been feeling that things are a bit “off” in relationships, you are not alone. We are collectively on the precipice of a breakthrough. Ultimately, we are wanting more. More connection, more intimacy, more pleasure. It’s no ordinary Mars-Venus opposition however. The intensity is amplified by the opposition pairing up with Rahu/Ketu (the lunar nodes who are always opposing each other in the chart). We have Venus with Rahu in Cancer – the amplified desire for more pleasure and enjoyment in our lives. There may be a feeling that something is missing, because we have Mars-Ketu. With this aspect, it can give a feeling of emptiness in relationships, or like we somehow don’t matter. With Venus/Rahu, there can be a general feeling of unfulfillment. Many people are wanting to find their soul mates right now! If people aren’t already partnered up, there will be a desire to find something more meaningful and from the heart.

Venus is love. Paired with Rahu, there can be grander desires. Mars is drive and action. Paired with Ketu, there can be like we are having the rug pulled out from under us, or that we are digging holes to only find more dirt.

On a larger scale, just looking at Mars-Ketu, this can be a time where we see more violence, terrorist attacks, (nuclear) threats, or just plain stupid militant actions/agreements. Ketu is a shadow point. It’s not actually a planet, but it can be likened to a malefic who has a body but no head, logic or sense. Translation = taking actions without really thinking them through. Mars is the action planet. It rules Aries and Scorpio and is exalted in Capricorn and debilitated in Cancer. For example, Mars in Scorpio would be equivalent to a cage-fighter or street-fighter. Mars in Aries would the prototypical Soldier. Mars in Capricorn is the general that gives orders to the soldiers. We currently have Mars in Capricorn (conjunct Ketu, the “headless” shadow planet) opposite Venus in Cancer (conjunct Rahu, the “head without a body” shadow planet). We can see the actions of our current government as not being thoroughly thought-out, impulsive actions that don’t bring many beneficial results.

On a mundane level in our personal lives, it can feel like we are fighting a shadow. Something that is intangible, but somehow feels threatening. We may not know what it is, or what this shadow represents. To make the most of this transit, Mars in Capricorn is asking for discipline. We can be disciplined, be willing to do the uncomfortable hard work, without a lot of immediate results. It is a great time for taking precautions, preventative measures, and applying spiritual discipline.

Ketu is the most spiritual influence in our charts. It represents detachment, loss, severance, letting go and liberation. People hear liberation and they think, “wonderful!” But it’s liberation from things that we have attached to: ie, our security. If they are unhealthy attachments, it’s time to let them go, or they may be plucked from a tight grip. Sometimes Ketu removes things that we don’t want or no longer need. But other times, it removes things we didn’t ask for. Ultimately, it is preparing us for shaking loose from this material world. Loss is good practice for the final liberation.
